Introspective and analytical, James takes a methodical approach to each of his files, ensuring that his clients each receive the best representation possible.
James conducts a commercial litigation practice, representing financial institutions, lease finance companies, secured and unsecured creditors, and trustees in bankruptcy. Historically, he has had a varied career, practicing in such areas as mortgage enforcement, real estate development, commercial financing, and business, municipal and leasing law. He also has extensive experience in other real estate matters, including Planning Act issues and title repair. This breadth of experience enables James to bring a broad perspective to his litigation files. He routinely appears before the Bankruptcy Court, the Toronto Civil List, and he has also appeared on a number of matters before the Ontario Court of Appeal and Federal Court.
A focus of James and one of his main interests is the prosecution of civil fraud conducted both inside and outside the context of bankruptcy. He is routinely retained to overturn fraudulent conveyances, transfers at undervalue and preferences, and to assist his creditor clients in pursuing their debtors even after discharge from bankruptcy. James especially enjoys working in the appellate courts, relishing the opportunity to challenge and test existing law.
James has an especial interest in books. He is easily taken in by ‘80s films, ‘90s pop music and the pulp paperbacks of the 1960s.
